Prairie Gold Homes: Building Solid Futures

Prairie Gold Homes teaches trades to its participants.

Prairie Gold Homes, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation that benefits all Nebraskans by helping inmates gain job skills and become productive citizens while building affordable, energy-efficient housing for our communities.

The organization operates an innovative job training program in collaboration with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on skills training. Graduates receive a nationally-recognized construction industry certificate, enhancing their employability upon release.

A Prairie Gold Homes project at rest on its foundation.

Inmates construct modular homes as part of the job training experience. The homes are built at our production site using high-quality, name-brand materials. They are energy-efficient, low maintenance, and offer universal design features like extra-wide doorways and lower positioned light switches. Added options like a roll-in shower and lever door handles create a cost-effective housing solution for seniors or people with other accessibility challenges.

When sold, the homes are transported to the developer’s building site for placement over basements or crawlspaces and final finishing work by local contractors. They can be duplexed and customized with additions like extra rooms, a garage, or carport.
